A guide to accessing broadcast television in Canada

As a new Canadian, it’s important to understand how broadcast television works in your new country. Luckily, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

Understanding the Canadian Broadcasting Landscape
Canada has numerous broadcast channels providing entertaining shows and informative news programs in English, French, and even multiple languages. Here’s a quick cheat sheet on some key channels.

Accessing Broadcast Television Services
Canada has several major broadcast television service providers, including Bell, Rogers, Shaw, and Telus. You can search online to compare prices and find the best deals.

In addition to traditional television, you can choose from several streaming services in Canada, some of which are free. You can also sign up for paid streaming services such as Netflix, Crave, Amazon Prime for TV shows and movies, and TSN for sports.

Factors to Consider for Newcomers
When deciding on a television service, consider if you prefer on-demand entertainment (like Netflix) or live television programs (news, sports, dramas, comedies). You can also combine both broadcast television and streaming services to fit your needs. Research different providers, compare prices, and make sure the channels you want are included in your package.

Additional Considerations for Newcomers
Canada offers valuable programs for new Canadians, many of which are free. You can access news and entertainment in various languages, providing a comforting viewing experience.

Signing up for broadcast television in Canada as a newcomer might seem intimidating, but the process is made easy by the providers.

FOOD FOR THOUGH
Canada welcomes these popular American franchises

Canada is seeing a surge of U.S. fast food chains setting up shop, and for good reason. Canadians have a growing appetite for diverse and convenient dining options, making the Great White North a prime target for American brands looking to expand.

Which chains are coming?

Shake Shack: The New York City-based burger chain opened its first Canadian location on June 13 in downtown Toronto. Its Canada-only menu items include the “Maple Salted Pretzel Shake” and “I Heart Butter Tart Concrete.”

Jersey Mike’s: This submarine sandwich brand announced plans in January to open 300 locations across Canada by 2034, starting with five new spots this year. Currently, it has franchises in Kitchener and London, Ontario.

Jimmy John’s: Founded in Illinois in 1983, Jimmy John’s will open its first Canadian location in mid-2024.

Crumbl Cookies: Utah-based Crumbl opened its first Canadian outlet in Edmonton in 2023, with plans for at least five more in the region.

Insomnia Cookies: Known for its late-night delivery, Insomnia opened its first Canadian location in Toronto last September and has since expanded to Kingston, with four more locations planned for Ontario this year.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers: This Kansas-based chain announced plans to open five locations in Alberta by the end of 2023.

Fogo de Chão: The Brazilian steakhouse chain launched its first Canadian location in Vancouver in 2023, with nine more planned, including two in Toronto and Montreal this year.

These chains see Canada as a land of opportunity, driven by Canadians' increasing demand for diverse and convenient dining experiences.
