FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Celebrating Canada’s Food Diversity
Canada offers a unique opportunity to explore a world of flavours. In an article by The Globe and Mail, Wole Olayinka’s journey captures the balance between holding onto the familiar and embracing the new.
When Wole moved to Calgary, he packed his suitcases with essentials from home to keep a taste of Nigeria close, including:
Dried fish
Garri flour
Spices and other essentials for those comforting meals that remind him of Nigeria.
To his delight, Calgary offered plenty of African food stores and restaurants where he could stock up on:
Powdered milk
Bitters
And even enjoy dishes like nkwobi (spicy cow feet) and Nigerian-style shawarma.
But part of Wole’s journey was stepping out of his comfort zone. He dove into the rich, diverse food culture of Canada, trying things like:
Poutine 🍟 (a true Canadian classic!)
Steaks 🥩
Sushi, tacos, hummus 🌮🍣
Of course, not everything was a hit:
Mussel linguine 🍝 and wasabi didn’t quite become favourites, but they sure made for interesting stories!
