Canadian housing checklist for international students
Finding the right housing can transform your experience as an international student.
But with so many details to keep track of, it’s easy to feel lost. Giving yourself enough time, exploring all your options, and understanding your rights can make a big difference.
Here’s our checklist to help you through the process.
⬜️ Consider all your housing options
Are you looking for a homestay to have a cultural experience, or do you prefer the typical college vibe with on-campus housing? Renting isn’t your only choice so make sure to explore different options to find the best fit for you.
⬜️ Give yourself enough time
Don’t rush into a decision—housing is too important to leave until the last minute. On-campus housing, in particular, can fill up quickly, so it’s best to start your search as early as possible.
⬜️ Know your rights as a tenant
Understanding your rights helps you avoid problems down the line. You’re entitled to a written lease, protection from unfair eviction, and a safe, maintained place to live. Also, know that your deposit can’t exceed one month’s rent.
⬜️ Watch out for scams
Scammers prey on the stress of finding housing. Stay vigilant—avoid landlords asking for full payment upfront, always visit the property, and never pay in cash. Request proof of ownership to ensure you're dealing with a legitimate landlord.
